Signalwave (or Broken Transmission) is a fascinating subgenre, and it's hard to pinpoint exactly what it is about these musical collages of found sounds, nostalgic commercials and garbled broadcasts that elicits such a visceral reaction in the listener.

French multi-talent dreyt nien presents his take on signalwave in these two haunting collections: The more bright and catchy “think. feel. drive.” is a mélange of moods and themes sourced from Japanese car ads. It's sprinkled with jazzy melodies and bursts of commercially appropriated pop tunes.

Its companion album “electronic” is based on an obscure promotional film for a then hyper futuristic French car, that sounds more ominous and dystopian than they might have realized. Swirling synthesizer riffs are mixed in with dark and gloomy pads, as if this were an Italian horror flick instead of a car commercial. The result is a spectrum of wild emotions, almost like visiting an acoustic museum of 80s style consumerism.

The 41 tracks (plus one tape exclusive version of “the talking car”) have found a physical presence on microcassettes, an abandoned format of tiny tapes that were originally found in answering machines and dictaphones. The fuzzy ultra low-fidelity sound quality of the medium adds a thick layer of hiss and garbling, that's just perfect for signalwave.

And over on legendary label Underwater Computing_ a shortened edit of “think. feel. drive.” entitled “Aux chasseurs de liberté” can be found on beautiful home-made 5'' lathe cuts called Mini Records. Check them out!
