Desert Sand's music always feels to me like I am wandering through a new world while having introspective moments.
I really like the piano on this one.
(and tbh I am mostly writing this review to say that the stickers I got with the cassette are so based.)

Cardian Matsu It’s been a while since desert sand’s first venture into entirely sample-free music, as of my time of writing this.

He’s continued to go further into finding more interesting ways to play with the idea, to compose in a way that turns what was once a landmark of his process into a stepping stone, overshadowed by his catalogue of current work.

“Piano Soliloquy” is a new favorite of mine, something that feels fully realized in its combination of slushwave technique and blissful piano composition. Favorite track: 白鍵、黒鍵.

William Hallworth-Cook — known professionally under his oddly satisfying moniker desert sand feels warm at night — is one of these artist that hardly need any introduction anymore. His virtuosity resonates with a devoted fanbase in the slushwave community and beyond, all of whom celebrate his unique and original sound. He has become the spearheading champion of the genre and the kind of inspirational community leader it deserves and whom we are proud to feature at Liminal Garden.

Originally released in 2021, Hallworth-Cook dedicates ピアノの独り言 (“Piano Soliloquy”) to the primordial sound of the piano, his trusted instrument of choice. It lets him focus on his strengths as a melodic composer, with immaculate and often deceptively simple melodies full of elegance and emotional range.

The instrumentation is decidedly not restricted to the piano, though: The fragile melodies are held together by a full and expansive framework of warm synths (グリッサンド), staccato guitar notes (調和), seductive horns (天のメロディー), the soft whorl of echoing ghost notes (私は眠りに落ちています) and the artist's own pitched down vocals. However, it’s almost always the piano at the emotional core of a piece. All of it comes together in a thick glaze of Hallworth-Cook’s secret mixture of phaser, reverb and EQ to create a warm, subdued, atmosphere.

Themes of nostalgia and melancholia can be perceived, while the Japanese liner notes cryptically hint at “transcendental meditation”. Is it a musical monologue or a conversation between the pianist and the audience that surpasses language and touches the heart? Ultimately it’s for the listener to decide. But if there is one clear motif running through the entire album, it’s the artist’s pure and deep devotion to music and melody itself.

Any avid telepath fan knows he's made some pretty mind-altering post-contemporary, mall setting vaporwave in his discography, but I genuinely think of Antara Communications as a steep outlier to all of his albums. It doesn't even sound like it was created with any actual compound structure found on Earth, but more like was chemically concocted from light and pure ether. It might as well be some kind of strange transmission from another nebula because it's simply out of this world. (pun intended) Quota

Traditional in a "telepath" sense, but Beyond Reality is also one of a few records from his catalogue that sticks out to me a lot due to it's single "night-and-day" change. Softer, lusher, more warmth, and gentler to the touch than a lot of his early mall muzak material. All in all, it's a great album that was perfectly crafted to be played on nights that are meant to unwind to. Quota
