There is nothing wrong with realizing that as a musician EXSHA is still very much in the process of artistic formation. Quite the contrary, it's our privilege as listeners that we are able to witness her multitude of talents unfold and grow in real time before our very eyes – or rather, ears.

So far on her journey the seventeen year old artist has taken us to both her version of gloomy dreampunk (Dysphoric Future, D34dn4m3) as well as dreamy slushwave (21st Road, Identity Disappeared). Her new album 误入歧途 sees her experiment with the still somewhat new variety of ambient music dubbed dreamtone.

The one aspect that unifies that eclectic output, at least in her current period of work, is the theme of identity. EXSHA uses her music to process her unique experiences as a young trans woman in Mumbai, India. That's her silhouette on the cover of 误入歧途! And hidden behind the Chinese titles you'll find a very personal narrative about loneliness and the pursuit of hope.

Sonically the album might not necessarily be what you'd expect. Dreamtone is music that is meant for relaxation and as an aid for falling asleep. And while one half of 误入歧途 certainly fits that bill, the other one is much darker and more ominous. But once you lie down, close your eyes and let the first moments of the intro track drown out the incessant rumble and noise of the city outside, you'll find yourself carried off into EXSHA's world. And you'll be fully captivated by it.
