Every once in a while there's an album that is truly unique and so unlike anything else coming out at the same time that it almost creates a whole new genre all on its own. Neo-Xelajú is such an album. Once the first exquisitely soft marimba sounds echo out, you realize you just stepped into a new and fascinating world.

The concept behind Neo-Xelajú is easy to explain: the basis for the tracks and their hypnotizing melodies are traditional Guatemaltecan folk songs from the mid-1900s, rearranged, repurposed and reinterpreted with a modern dreampunk sensibility. These traditional melodies are given new artistic sense and context, paying respect to what came before. Enriched with a surreally textured ambience they now describe an alternate cyberpunk universe with a futuristic world as built by the Mayan culture.

To help create this world LIFE2979光 has brought on friends and family that feature in supporting roles on half of the album's tracks. They all come together in celebrating a deeply rooted connection to Mesoamerican culture and a unique musical heritage in a way that is fresh and truly magical.
